Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat's recent comments on the ‘mandir-masjid’ issue have reportedly not been well received by several spiritual leaders.
Among the seer groups, the Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti (AKSS), a religious group, criticised Mohan Bhagwat's comments, stating that religious matters should be decided by spiritual leaders rather than the RSS, according to media reports. TOI reported Swami Jitendranand Saraswati, the general secretary of AKSS, saying "When it comes to religion, it is the religious gurus who should decide. Whatever they decide will be respected by the Sangh and VHP."
Despite Bhagwat's previous similar statements, Saraswati pointed out that temple structures have been identified at 56 new sites, indicating a continued focus on these sensitive issues. He added that religious organizations tend to act based on public sentiment, not political interests, the media reports showed.

Earlier, Swami Avimukteshwarananda, the Shankaracharya of the Jyotish Peeth said that Bhagwat speaks according to his convenience. "Mohan Bhagwat speaks according to his convenience. When he needed votes, then he kept speaking only on temples and is now saying Hindus should not look for temples, he said, Hindus have faced several atrocities. Temples were destroyed. If Hindus want such temples to be resurrected, there is nothing wrong with it."
What Did Bhagwat Say?During a lecture on ‘India – The Vishwaguru’ in Pune on December 17, Bhagwat commented, "Following the construction of the Ram Temple, some people believe they can gain influence as Hindu leaders by stirring up similar issues in new locations." He added, "This is unacceptable... We have lived in harmony for a long time. To share this harmony with the world, we must create a model for it." Bhagwat further emphasized, "No one will become a Hindu leader by engaging in temple-mosque disputes and fueling communal divisions."
These comments followed petitions filed by Hindu groups, calling for surveys of mosques believed to be built on temple sites destroyed by Muslim invaders. The recent clashes in Sambhal, UPps88, were linked to a similar petition regarding the Shahi Jama Masjid.
